Hello, my name is Thomas J. Horan and I am the founder of Acorn Capital Partners. I have been in the investment business for over 20 years and have spent the majority of that time as an active investor and a student of investment analysis. My experience includes global macro research, fundamental equity research, investment banking, venture capital, technical analysis and business management.
I began my career in 1999 at a small brokerage firm called Prime Charter, which was later acquired by Oppenheimer. In my early years in the brokerage business I found investment ideas by scanning the quarterly 13f filings of small cap hedge fund managers and trying to reverse engineer their investment process. I also did some investment banking work, raising money for several early stage companies. I had some early success and was an early stage investor in Easylink Services (acquired by OpenText) and AGI Dermatics (acquired by Estee Lauder). I also made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot about the nuances involved in early stage investing and investing in deep value businesses with a catalyst.
In the late 2000’s, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work alongside the highest rated technical analyst on Wall Street according to Institutional Investors All American investment survey, where I studied collective intelligence, sector rotation and chart analysis. In the early 2010’s, I served as the cofounder of a tech startup where I studied the investment process of Y combinator and learned a lot about business and people management. At the same time, I served as the general partner of Delphi Capital, a fund of hedge funds, where I outsourced capital to several top performing portfolio managers with various investment styles and learned about their investment process.
I believe that the breadth of my experience in various facets of business and finance and my passion for investment analysis give me the ability to serve as a valuable partner in helping people manage their investments.
